Revised 2012-07-12
The Hummingbird Tools are a collection of Rhino – Grasshopper components that are designed to work with the WhiteFeet ModelBuilder application.
These components are used with Rhino-Grasshopper geometry to write instructions to an Excel file. The format of this file has been pre-defined so that it can be used by the ModelBuilder tool.
The ModelBuilder tool is used to read the Excel file instructions and create native geometry in Revit.
A. Requirements
To use this solution you must have the following software installed:
• Windows 7 with .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.0.
• Revit:Separate versions for Revit 2012 and Revit 2013 are provided.
• Rhino: Version 4 only.
• Grasshopper: Plugin to Rhino
• Excel: Version 2010 has been used in development; not sure if other versions will work.
B. Important Notes Regarding Downloads
These instructions describe how to install both the Rhino-Grasshopper and the Revit files.Be sure that any .zip files are “unblocked” by right clicking on them in Explorer, selecting “Properties” and “Unblock”.(This is required by the increased security with .NET 4.0)Also check that the individual .DLL files are also unblocked after they are unzipped.
In addition to unblocking the files, it has been reported that you may need to change the permission onsecurity tab for each file to full access for the user. (See image at right.)
C. Installation and Testing
1. Installation
Copy and install the files in the Rhino-Grasshopper and WhiteFeet ModelBuilder sections which follow.
2. Testing – Rhino
• If the Hummingbird components are not appearing in the Grasshopper Extra area then you need to resolve the path settings in Rhino.
• Download one of the test projects and run it in Rhino-Grasshopper.You will need to create an Excel file and edit the path to point to it.
• If the Hummingbird component in the Grasshopper test file is showing as red or there is an error message you need to be sure that the Excel path and the .DLL reference are resolving properly.
• If the program is working the Excel file should fill with data.
3. Testing – Revit
• Once the Excel file is working, open a Revit session with any empty project.
• If you get an error message or the ModelBuilder is not available from the Addins menu then you need to resolve the path in the add-in file or unblock the DLL file (see above.)
• Run the ModelBuilder tool and select the Import Excel to Elements button.Enter the path to the Excel file (which must be already open.)
• Run the command.(You may see some error messages listed at the completion of the process but these are normal. They are reporting on issues that Revit had with building the objects.)
D. Rhino-Grasshopper Files
Grasshopper components are normally installed by starting Grasshopper and dragging-and-dropping a .gha file over the Grasshopper session. In this case, a .dll file must also be placed in the same location. The files are:
Hummingbird.gha
WhiteFeet.RevitModelBuilderUtility.dll
Typically these will be placed in a folder: (Example is for Windows 7; Windows XP will be similar.)
C:\Users\<<UserName>>\AppData\Roaming\Grasshopper\Libraries\Hummingbird
E. WhiteFeet ModelBuilder Add-In for Revit
The ModelBuilder is an Add-In to Revit. This documentation describes how to install it as a single application. It can also be accessed as part of the WhiteFeet Tools for Revit set: http://www.WhiteFeet.com
1. Revit 2012
a) DLL Files
Three .dll files are required:
WfRevitModelBuilder.dll
WfRevitUtility.dll
WfRevitUtilityExcel.dll
These files should be in the same folder. For Example:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WhiteFeet\RAC2012
Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\ WhiteFeet\RAC2012
b) Add-in file
If the folders suggested above the add-in files can be used as-is.Otherwise it must be edited in a text editor to the correct path.
RevitModelBuilder2012.addin
The file must be placed in a location where Revit will find it.For example:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2012
Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2012
2. Revit 2013
a) DLL Files
Three .dll files are required:
WhiteFeet.RevitModelBuilder.dll
WhiteFeet.RevitUtility.dll
WhiteFeet.RevitUtilityExcel.dll
These files should be in the same folder. For Example:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ WhiteFeet\RAC2013
Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\ WhiteFeet\RAC2013
b) Add-in file
If the folders suggested above the add-in files can be used as-is.Otherwise it must be edited in a text editor to the correct path.
RevitModelBuilder2013.addin
The file must be placed in a location where Revit will find it.For example:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2013
Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2013
